Comparing Web Hosts

By Kristian

Before signing up with a new web host, take some time to compare a few different hosts. This will help you to find a good quality host with affordable pricing. Do not pay too much for hosting, but also do not give up quality of service which is just as important.

You can start out by making a list of some hosts you want to explore further. Visit hosting directories to find some potential hosts. Many have advanced searches so that you can find hosts in your price range that offer the features you need. In addition, you may want to ask around to find out what other web hosts friends and business associates are using. By visiting some web hosting and webmaster forums you can do web host searches or inquiries to be matched with hosts meeting you criteria.

After you have a list of potential hosts, it is time to begin comparing the hosts to find the one best suited for you. Visit the websites for these hosts. Do a comparison of the prices of their hosting packages and what is included with the package. You may find that some hosts offer more bandwidth and disk space than others for the same price. This is important to keep in mind. However, price along is not all you should be comparing and evaluating.

Take a look at each website and see how easy it is to contact customer support. Do they offer any guarantees for response time. You may find that some hosts appear to have a more efficient system for handling customer support than others. It may even be wise to “test” a few support teams. Ask them some presales questions to discover how quickly they respond and how friendly and knowledgeable they appear. In doing this comparison you may find that one or more hosts do not have what would seem to be a very effective support staff.

You can also read through the web host’s information on their data centers and hosting equipment. Find out what bandwidth providers and such that each host uses. Do they service their servers in house or is this outsourced? If need be you may want to ask some of these questions if the answers cannot be found on their websites. This provides you with an opportunity to better compare and evaluate the hosting services you are likely to receive.

Another important factor of any hosting provider is their uptime. Many hosts offer uptime guarantees. They should be able to provide a minimum of 99% uptime. Compare hosts and try to find those that offer the highest amount of uptime. Some hosts even have server monitors and display the results on their website. This gives you the opportunity to see what uptime is for each of their servers over a period of time.

Spend some time evaluating each host. Compare their prices, features, bandwidth and disk space. Also evaluate each host to get a feel for how reliable their services really are as well as their support staff. By taking this time to investigate, you are more likely to find the best hosting services for you.
