Question to Ask a Potential Host
By Kristian
Before signing up with any host, it may be a good idea to give them a bit of presales test. This is an opportunity to see how friendly their support team is and how long they take to respond to your inquiries. You can also begin to test their knowledge and experience. Your questions also provide an opportunity to learn more about a host and to further evaluate them.
You may want to begin by asking the host a little more about their business. For example find out how long they have been in business. You may also want to ask how many workers they employ and how many websites they are currently hosting. This will give you an idea of the size and stability of the hosting company. Of course, you do not want a host that is here today and gone tomorrow.
Then it might be a good idea to tell a host a little bit about your website. What is the purpose of the site and how are you looking for the site to perform? Tell them if you are planning to use databases or if you would like ecommerce features. Then you can ask them if their hosting plans will support your website and all the necessary features. This provides you with an idea of whether or not their hosting plans are really suitable for your needs. This is as opposed to signing up for hosting only to find out you cannot make your website function the way you need.
Ask the host if they keep tabs on their server uptimes. A particularly good web host should do so. This is a way for them to keep tabs on their servers so they can identify and solve problems. It is also a way for you to learn how reliable their services really are. Uptime is an important part of your web hosting services. You do not want to be paying for hosting only to find that your website is often offline.
It can also be a good idea to ask some specific questions about a host’s sales and support staff. Find out if their customer support is out sourced or if it is provided by their own in house employees. Ask the host how long it generally takes on average to solve a hosting problem. For example, how long after your submit a support ticket can you expect some type of reply? And how long does it take as an average for any hosting difficulties you have to be fixed?
You can also ask a host some questions about their hosting equipment. Find out if they own and operate their own data center. Ask for some information on their data center and the specs on their servers. What type of software do they use? What is their operating system? Questions like these can tell you more about the hosting services and help you to see how knowledgeable the staff is about the hosting services.
