To Go Managed or Unmanaged (Hosting)

So you have made the decision to use dedicated hosting services? What do you need to do next? It is a good idea to consider whether you will want or need managed or unmanaged hosting services. Managed hosting is usually more expensive since the web host will be responsible for managing and maintaining the dedicated server.

If you have a pretty good background in Internet technology, you may very well be able to opt for unmanaged hosting. If you have unmanaged hosting you will be responsible for a great deal of your hosting experience. For example, you will need to be able to install any software you wish to use. In addition, you will need to be able to maintain your server and make any other updates that you wish to have. These may be things that you are able to do with your knowledge and skills. If so, unmanaged hosting might be right for you. .

Unmanaged hosting services are much less expensive than managed hosting. You pay a quite a bit more each month if you need the technical services to be provided by your web host. In some cases the cost per month could be 75% or more for managed hosting services. So if you or someone on your staff (if this is a business) does have the skills and knowledge needed to update, manage and maintain the server on your own, you should consider unmanaged hosting.

However, perhaps you do have IT experience but do not have the time to manage the server. This may be too time consuming especially if you are running a business website. You may not want or be able to take time away from the other aspects of your business. If this is the case, managed hosting may be worth considering. This is especially true if you can afford managed hosting. It may be worth the cost. Taking time away from other areas of your business could turn out to be more costly than paying for managed hosting services.

Consider what services you need your web host to provide. If you want them to provide the security for your website, then you will need managed hosting. Managed hosting services can also provide you with a firewall for your server, which can be managed by your hosting provider. Managed hosting can give you piece of mind that your server is being well monitored and that your data is being backed up. These assurances are probably especially important to you if you are running an ecommerce or large business website.

For clients who can afford managed hosting and who want piece of mind that their server will be secure and running at top performance, it could very well worth the extra money for managed services. Customers will know that their services are being managed by knowledgeable IT staff members. On the other hand, if a client has the time and knowledge to manage the servers and other aspects of their hosting experience on their own, they can save money by selecting unmanaged hosting services.
