Should you go Dedicated?
Most individuals and even many small to medium sized businesses do quite well by using shared hosting services. However, sometimes a bit more is needed to host a website well. In these cases, the possibility of using dedicated server hosting comes into mind. There are some questions you can ask yourself and factors you can consider in order to decide if dedicated hosting is right for your website.
If you or your company does not own your own servers than you will have to rent either server space (shared hosting) or an entire server (dedicated hosting) in order to host your website. Shared hosting means just that; you will be sharing your server with other websites. Although this typically works quite well in some cases it is not the ideal option. When you use dedicated hosting, you will have your own server and network connection. The server space and connection will not be shared with other websites.
Shared hosting services are a great deal less expensive than dedicated hosting. For most basic websites and small business websites, shared hosting is the most cost effective choice. However, for many larger business websites and websites with high volumes of traffic, dedicated hosting may be the better choice.
You may need dedicated hosting if your website utilizes customized or very specific software and applications. With shared hosting, you will generally have limited choices as to what applications and software will be available. A hosting package will include certain applications and features that are common to most of the other hosting packages. With dedicated hosting however, you will be able to implement nearly any application you need for your website. This can be especially important for very specialized ecommerce functions.
For websites that need a high level of security (especially ecommerce sites), dedicated server hosting can typically provide a higher level of security than shared hosting. The website will be on its own server and therefore a hosting customer does not need to worry that their account and website will be harmed in some way by another website or hosting client. When you use dedicated hosting you can also have a firewall for your dedicated server to provide even more security.
If you need a great deal of "room" for growth, expansion and changes to your website, dedicated hosting may be right for you. With dedicated hosting you can use a high amount of bandwidth and disk space. You may not even use all that is included with your server which will allow you to build your website to be even larger and to accept even more website traffic.
When using dedicated server hosting, you will also be able to make changes to the server as needed. This is not something you can do with shared hosting services. Dedicated hosting will allow you to make upgrades to the server hard drive. You can also make updates to the ram processors. In addition, you can make changes to software applications. All of this can be down on your own without contacting your hosting provider.
Dedicated hosting might be right for you if your website receives very large volumes of traffic. If you need very specialized software applications for your website, dedicated hosting may be your best choice. With dedicated hosting you can make changes to and upgrade the server specifications and software applications.
