What to look for in a VPS Host
VPS is a web services infrastructure that slices up a single physical web server into multiple "virtual" web servers with each server distinct and separate from others- with an entirely distinct set of features and a separate OS. VPS provides most of the features of a dedicated server at the affordable pricing of shared server space- and in doing so it has revolutionized the entire sphere of web hosting!!
However with the plethora of hosts that have mushroomed in the field of web hosting – which host caters precisely to your need and which service offered by them make most business sense for you- it is a difficult choice to make, more so when you are a new entrant and have just started looking.
The choice must be made with much care and caution as it involves a major commitment and would govern the experience of visitors to your site.
Following Points must be looked into before selecting a host:
- Does your setup have a maximum amount of memory, CPU %, and/ or a limitation on the bandwidth a site can use, if yes, how much and what’s the cost of additional units of each of the above?
- Is there a control panel for administering the server?
- How many clients are there on the system?
- If someone else’s web server/ site crashes will it affect yours?
- How often do you back up the system?
Although these do not amount to an exhaustive list of what you should know about the host before entering into a commitment about the host – but these shall definitely give you a general overview as to what services you can expect from your host and what is the amount of control that you shall be able to exercise over your owned server space.
In most cases, the server's total resources are divided evenly by the number of VPS's on the machine. i.e. If there are 10 virtual servers, the total RAM, disk space, etc. is simply divided by 10 and each VPS gets 10% of the total
The shared resources have an important role to play as they shall govern the maximum traffic that your site can entertain and you certainly do not want to turn away surfers by giving them a nightmare experience due to a sluggish surfing experience.
Similarly you would want to know about the safety and security measures incorporated into your VPS by your host. For you do not want that every time the amateur, sharing space with the same host, crashes his site – it affects yours too.
Other queries that you might have may pertain to your personal needs administered for your business. In case you are new or alien to networked system maintenance- you might want you host to maintain the same for you – the additional price would cover for the inconvenience of having a down system, every time you are out to test your skills. !
With a little due diligence in selecting a host you can surely make VPS deliver the goods for you!
