Who is VPS for

VPS as Virtual Private Hosting is popularly called - is a way of getting the functionality of a server at very economical costs. Using specialized software installed on the server, accounts can exist on the same server, much like shared hosting, but these accounts remain in complete isolation from each other. Notwithstanding any limitations, these accounts allow root access to install programs and applications that shall not be available to other accounts. Hence you are given the freedom to customize your VPS just like a dedicated server but at the fraction of a cost.

The major driving factor for VPS accounts is that they all operate independently of each other. With each user having his own operating system and applications (including Sendmail) which can be customized by the owner with new applications- the system ensures no interference from other users on server. VPS also affords the customer a certain minimum allowance of bandwidth and processor time, so no particular account can monopolize an entire server.

You should go in for VPS for the following reasons:

  • Total root privilege: As explained earlier- it ensures that you have the access to make as many changes as you want in your system – with no interference from the server administrator.
  • Setup as many domains/sub-domains as your disk space allows: this shall give you the independence of not restricting to an allotted number of domains- and based on your needs you can keep the number of domains.
  • Every VPS has its own personal "Sendmail" it ensures that VPS customers won't get their site banned (which frequently happens to traditional shared hosting customers). AOL, Earthlink, Yahoo! and more are in the process of banning 1,000's of sites a day due to one customer on the same server spamming. VPS avoids the risk of your site being banned and causing you the loss of certain important mails.
  • Each and every VPS account (disk space, memory) is designed to keep it isolated from other VPS accounts- this is possible because each VPS account is located in its own "Virtual Environment". Other VPS accounts will not be able to access your files nor data in the memory- ensuring zero interference. You shall also own copy of apache, DNS servers, database server, and user accounts. This VPS security model makes it ideal for secure credit card processing in e-commerce applications.

VPS and Dedicated servers are similar. However it is always advisable to go for a VPS initially as it helps to minimize your budget and then depending upon traffic you may get a dedicated server also.

Most servers have the capacity to cater to the needs of multiple sites. This makes it economically less feasible to dedicate a server – until you can optimally utilize all that additional space.

Therefore until the nature of your business requires you to have multiple sites or you have any other revenue structure to account for the huge investment associated with maintaining a dedicated server- VPS should be the obvious answer to your web hosting needs.
